Chapter Eight

“Are you thinking about Jared?” Sam asked.

It was an hour later and Penelope and Sam were in the kitchen of Parties on the Pier. Sam was checking on her supplies for the parfaits now that the Lovejoys had selected their option.

Isla was expressing how disgruntled she was that her coworkers had arrived late by moving pieces of furniture loudly in the other room. Penelope knew that the furniture didn’t really need to be moved and Isla’s sole purpose was to create noise. Since she and Sam had told Isla and Gus the reason for their lateness, she didn’t feel guilty. She was happy to have been there for Cynthie in her moment of need. She also had thought that she was doing the right thing when she followed up on a potential lead.

She was annoyed that Jared and his warning were occupying her thoughts and that Sam was able to pick up on that.

“Well, he’s part of the things I’ve been thinking about,” Penelope admitted. “The whole situation has me feeling sour.”

“Same,” Sam agreed. “Maybe I could sweeten things by whipping up some more honey parfaits. I probably should test how I want the toppings to look on the top layer again, and as a perk, we can eat them.”

“That would be nice,” Penelope said, though she wasn’t quite ready to smile yet. She hated that someone had died in town and that even though all her instincts were crying out that the man had been murdered, Detective Jared Whavers was, again, not listening to her.

“It must be difficult for you,” Sam said, as she cut the honeycomb into the proper shape to fit into the parfait glasses. “Pamela used to talk about how good she thought you and Jared would be together. I don’t think she did it a ton so that it was inappropriate or annoying, but in the many years we worked for her, I did hear her mention it more than once. However, now whenever, we see Jared, he doesn’t seem like someone I’d want my best friend to spend time with. He’s always so disgruntled.”

“Exactly! And I can understand why he doesn’t want me getting involved in his cases, but it’s not like I go out looking for trouble. These situations landed in front of me. I did pretty well figuring out who the killer was too. You’d think by now, he would listen to my ideas.” Penelope sighed. “But that’s not the only thing that’s bothering me.”

“You don’t like that a guy you met yesterday is now dead?”

“Of course, that bothers me,” said Penelope. “But I was also thinking about the Lovejoy family. It makes me very sad that they don’t get along at all. I often wish that I had more family, but they clearly don’t. They’re feuding and fighting and might have committed a murder.”

Sam stopped her food preparation to pat her friend on the shoulder. She knew all about Penelope’s situation and realized how it might be contributing to her sadness here.
